Why baking soda fights cancer?

There was an interesting discussion on the Advanced Bionutritionals Facebook page a couple weeks ago. If you’ve ever visited the page, you probably know about the great health tips posted there every week. One of them said, “Did you know that managing cancer with low doses of chemotherapy can be more effective than attempting to kill the disease in one massive attack? A new study shows promising results. Here’s what you need to know: CLICK HERE."

That link takes you to a great article by my friend and colleague Frank Shallenberger, MD. Well, one great response to the tip came from Dieter S. He wrote, “Drink a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of clean water three times a day and cure most cancers in weeks.” We’ve known about baking soda’s ability to fight cancer for years. I first heard about it 20 years ago. So it’s nothing new. But the reason baking soda works is just now coming out.

For years, experts thought baking soda’s cancer-fighting ability came from its ability to alkalinize an acidic body. Many cancers thrive when the body has a pH that’s more acidic than alkaline, so this makes sense. But it’s not the only reason it works.

This came out when Jeanie D. responded to Dieter’s tip by asking, “Would that create a sodium imbalance?” Great question, Jeanie. The scientific name for baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. So it would make sense that the sodium might be too much for some people. However, sodium is an acid-neutralizer. In other words, if your pH is acidic, then you’re probably low on sodium already. Taking some sodium bicarbonate wouldn’t create an imbalance, it would fix it.

But there’s more to the sodium story than just pH.

It’s common to find low sodium blood levels in patients who have cancer and are undergoing cancer treatments. However, there’s some debate as to whether the cancer and its treatment causes the low levels of sodium or if the low levels of sodium caused the cancer.

We know that low sodium can lead to cancer, including lung cancer. So it’s quite possible that low sodium levels make you more susceptible to cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers today. Its occurrence is growing rapidly. Is it possible low sodium levels are to blame?

But regardless of whether the low sodium level caused the cancer or the other way around, it’s clear that fixing a low sodium condition can fight the cancer. This is one reason baking soda can have such a profound impact on cancer.

What’s concerning is that low blood sodium is common in older adults. It’s especially common for anyone who is hospitalized or living in a long-term care facility. So you need to stay on top of your sodium levels. Most adults should have a sodium blood level of 136-145 mEq/L. If it’s low, you’ll need to take steps to raise it. Most doctors will give you water pills or an IV to raise the levels.

If you have cancer and want to try baking soda, find a doctor familiar with its use and who can tell you how much you should use. If you don’t have cancer, but know you’re acidic, you can try one-half teaspoon of baking soda in your water. You can drink this every two hours, but don’t take more than seven doses in a day. If you’re over 60, keep the dose to three per day unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

Medical Errors: A Hidden Killer

Medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the United States, a new study contends. Johns Hopkins University researchers analyzed eight years of U.S. data and concluded that more than 250,000 people died each year due to medical errors. If confirmed, that would make medical errors the third leading cause of death among Americans.

Currently, respiratory disease, which kills about 150,000 people a year, is listed as the third leading cause of death by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, "incidence rates for deaths directly attributable to medical care gone awry haven't been recognized in any standardized method for collecting national statistics," said Dr. Martin Makary, a professor of surgery at Baltimore-based Hopkins.

The CDC's data collection method does not classify medical errors separately on a death certificate, according to the study authors, who called for changes to that criteria. "The medical coding system was designed to maximize billing for physician services, not to collect national health statistics, as it is currently being used," Makary explained in a university news release.

The Hopkins researchers examined four separate studies that analyzed medical death rate data from 2000 to 2008, including two that used data from federal agencies. Then, using hospital admission rates from 2013, the investigators extrapolated that information, and based on a total of over 35 million hospitalizations, more than 251,000 deaths stemmed from a medical error. That translates to 9.5 percent of all U.S. deaths each year, the study authors said. But the CDC data paints a different picture.

The CDC statistics show that in 2013, over 611,000 people in the United States died of heart disease, nearly 585,000 died of cancer and about 150,000 died of chronic respiratory disease. "Top-ranked causes of death as reported by the CDC inform our country's research funding and public health priorities," Makary said. "Right now, cancer and heart disease get a ton of attention, but since medical errors don't appear on the list, the problem doesn't get the funding and attention it deserves." The findings were published May 3 in the BMJ.

New Israeli Cancer Vaccine Triggers Response In 90% Of Cancer Types

There’s no doubt that cancer is one of the world’s most vicious diseases. For decades, scientists have been trying to find a cure for cancer, a terminal illness that kills 8 million people worldwide every year. With 14 million new cancer cases diagnosed around the globe every year, according to the World Health Organization, the need for prevention is vital. Now, an Israeli biotechnology company is developing a vaccine for cancer, which is not designed to treat the disease – but to prevent it from returning.

Vaxil BioTherapeutics, based in Nes Ziona, Israel, has spent over half a decade developing ImMucin, a prophylactic cancer vaccine, which can trigger a response in about 90 percent of all types of cancer, according to the company.

“Vaxil is developing a drug to keep the cancer from coming back,” Julian Levy, Vaxil’s CFO, tells “We are trying to harness the natural power of the immune system to fight against cancer by seeking out cancer cells and destroying them.”

Levy explains that ImMucin is not a replacement for traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. Rather, the company is targeting a different stage in the patient’s battle against cancer, specifically the early stages of the detection, as well as during remission. That’s why, unfortunately, the drug won’t be helpful to many cancer patients – specifically those who are in advanced stages of the disease – because it requires a relatively healthy body to be fully effective.

Even though ImMucin is a vaccine, it is given to people who are already sick, unlike traditional vaccines. So, while ImMucin’s scientific mechanism is one of a vaccine, from the point of view of the patient, it acts exactly like a drug that has physiological effects when introduced to the body.

“Many preventative cancer vaccines today are not actual vaccines against cancer,” Levy says. “Young women can take a vaccine for the HPV virus, which doesn’t combat cancer; it’s a vaccine against a virus that has been proven to lead to a more serious cervical cancer.”

Training the immune system to attack cancerous cells

ImMucin works by stimulating a part of the immune system and teaching it to attack certain cells with certain markers that indicate the presence of cancer. When the drug is introduced during an early stage of cancer, the hope is that as a patient’s cancer begins to creep back, the immune system is trained appropriately to know which cells to destroy and which to leave be.

This immune response has been consistent throughout Vaxil’s clinical trials on the vaccine over the past few years. The company ran trials exclusively on Multiple Myeloma patients until January 2014, when it began trials on breast cancer patients.

Vaxil’s current switch from successful myeloma trials to breast cancer trials would certainly turn some heads in the biotech community. That’s because typically, when a drug has this much success on a certain type of cancer, a company would provide more resources to finish the trials (through Phase III) and get it to market – it wouldn’t delve into new projects.

Vaxil’s most recent valuation is just under $3 million. In the US, clinical trials and ongoing research and development can cost hundreds of millions of dollars per drug, and it’s very possible that Vaxil doesn’t have the cash to push ImMucin to the market at this point. However, Levy is confident that ImMucin will be on the market by the end of this decade.

Vaxil BioTheraputics has promising technology and initial clinical success, especially since ImMucin has the potential to treat 90 percent of cancers found in patients. Certainly, this kind of immunotherapy for an illness previously thought of as incurable, gives hope to millions of patients and their families.
